Introduction and Philosophy of the Department

The Department of Chemical and Mineral Resources Engineering was historically privileged to be one of the pioneering Departments at the commencement of academic activities at the First Technical University, Ibadan in 2017. The Department was one of the three Departments that were in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. The Department was established to produce self-reliant graduates who are very conversant in a broad sense with theories, principles and their practical applications. The programme was also designed to arouse entrepreneurial spirits needed for self-employment and economic emancipation.

The Department started operation in the 2017/2018 Academic Session with a single programme. The petroleum engineering programme rests on foundation of mathematical and engineering principles, as well as the application of the same. At the beginning 2019/2020 session, the Department was restructured with the appointment of a coordinator, Engr. O. S. Teniola, under the supervision of the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. O. A. Koya. The first set of students registered for their compulsory core petroleum engineering courses like, PEE 301, PEE 303, PEE 305, PEE 307, PEE 309 and PEE 311 in the 2019/2020 Academic Session. At this level, the Department had only 10 students with two full-time lecturers and one industry-based visiting lecturer. The Department did not have a building but shared facilities with other Departments. The students were taken on field trips to have vivid experience of activities taking place in active oil fields pending the engineering laboratories building which was then under construction.

The Chemical Engineering Programme having being approved by the National University Commission commenced in the 2020/2021 Academic Session

Vision

To promote World-Class innovation in a sustainable manner driven by entrepreneurial practices using cutting edge technology and to produce students who can think outside the box in physical sciences, harness modern technology, and whose research contributes a substantial proportion of innovations in Nigeria and occupy leadership positions in public and private sectors of the Nigeria economy.

Mission

To train hands with cutting edge technology, entrepreneurial, industrial, innovation skills, promote innovation, impact-based research for industrial and societal benefits and engage in knowledge transfer for industrial and societal development, engender a sense of selfless public services.

In addition, our students are prepared to pursue advanced degree in any related engineering field by educating them in the fundamental concepts, knowledge, and laboratory techniques and skills of the engineering practise.

Administration of the Department

The Department is normally headed by an academic staff not below the rank of senior lecturer, who must be professionally registered by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). The appointment of the Head of Department is at the discretion of the Vice-Chancellor, normally for a period of one year, but can be renewed or rotated to another qualified person in ensuring all-inclusive leadership development in the administration of the Department.

The Head is assisted by other members of staff formed into various committees, panels and groups, such as Board of Examiners, Review Panel, Student-Staff Relation, etc. The Department also holds regular General Departmental Meetings, where all recommendations from the various activity groups are considered.
