• Success in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations or their equivalent, with five credits in subjects which must include English Language, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry ALL IN ONE SITTING.

  • Successful candidates are also required to have acceptable levels of performance in the Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) administered by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

  • Candidates with GCE ‘A’ level passes in Mathematics (Pure and Applied), Chemistry and Physics in addition to (a) above may be admitted to the 200 level of the five-year programmes.

Philosophy of the Programme

The philosophy of the programme is to produce graduates who are able to combine sound theoretical knowledge with rich practical skills, capable of enabling them to embark on competitive advanced research globally, take up challenging positions in relevant industries and public services, and to reach a level of self-reliance.

The programme is geared towards the practical applications of engineering sciences to the solution of problems regarding the design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of industrial machines, vehicles of various categories (such as, automobiles, trains and airplanes), machine tools, heat exchangers, industrial process equipment, power plants, as well as systems for heating, refrigeration, air-conditioning and ventilation.

Students are prepared for professional positions in design analysis, manufacture and the application of machines, processes and controls. Consequently, the programme includes Computer-Aided Mechanical Engineering (CAME), which integrates in-depth computing skills with traditional mechanical engineering topics. Skills such as programming in a variety of languages, use of internet resources, general purpose application tools, modelling and simulation techniques and associated software, computer in design and manufacturing, and the use of embedded computers for control and automation.

The programme embraces traditional mechanical engineering topics such as applied mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, stress analysis, engineering design and engineering management from the modern ‘computer – orientated’ viewpoint, by paying particular attention to such topics as computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacture, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, robotic, control systems, simulation and computer programming languages, using wide number of state of the art computer-based engineering applications.

The objectives of the programme is to produce graduates who:

  • Are able to develop new and functional products and processes, and can effectively communicate such findings, orally and in writing.
  • Have acquired good understanding of integrating all aspects of mechanical, electrical, computer and control engineering to become employable in modern manufacturing, automotive and energy industries.
  • Possess broad and sufficient knowledge in core and tangential subjects to embark on advanced studies in specialized areas of mechanical engineering.
  • Can deploy both numerical and experimental analyses, including computer controlled systems, to design, simulate and manufacture functional engineering components and systems.
  • Identifying local technical needs, can apply sound engineering principles in providing safe, efficient and socially acceptable ingenious and sustainable solutions.
  • Are innovative enough to exploit entrepreneurial skills, management and technical competence to become self-employed.
  • Admission to 100-Level is through the Joint Matriculation Examination in English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. To be eligible for admission, candidates must have the Ordinary Level of General Certificate of Education (GCE) or Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) with at least five credit passes including Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English Language at NOT more than two (2) sittings. A credit pass in Further Mathematics or Technical Drawing will be an advantage.

The vision of The Technical University, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, is to be a world-class institution that is fully grounded in entrepreneurial practices, unique innovation, sustainability science, and commitment to international best practices.
