History, Philosophy and Goals of the programme.

The Department of Microbiology has the historic privilege of being one of the foundation Departments at the inception of Technical University, Ibadan in 2017. The Department was established to produce self-reliant graduates who are very conversant in a broad sense with theories, principles and applications of Microbiology in their later employment in the field of Microbiological researches, in Universities, Industries or on their own. The programme is also designed to arouse entrepreneurial spirits needed for self-employment and economic emancipation of the ‘would be graduate’ of this programme. The Department is committed to motivating students to achieve their goals through formal and informal but well-structured platforms including provisions for counseling in career and entrepreneurial orientation for application of knowledge and economic principles. This is vigorously pursued and achieved by attending to the educational and welfare needs of the students, the research and career needs of staff within the Department, and to make our products complete graduates required for the future leadership requirements of the nation and the world at large. The Bachelor of Science Degree programme in Microbiology is designed to produce well trained professionals of Microbiology for Nigeria’s industries and higher institutions and mankind. This is expected to satisfy the manpower needs of schools, institutions of higher learning, research institutes, agricultural establishments, industries and hospitals.

Objectives of the Programme

The curriculum designed for the B.Sc Microbiology will prepare the graduates to cope with the issues for wide spectrum of areas including Medicine, Dairy, Poultry, Agriculture and Industry. These groomed man power will play a vital role in the economic growth that would bring qualitative change in the above mentioned areas in the country. Internship in the curriculum will provide hands-on experience in different fields mentioned above. It will also create awareness about public health and safety in order to facilitate the establishment of sound relationship between Microbiologist, society & industry. The programme is also designed to produce graduates who have sound basic knowledge of microbiology and its applications especially in above mentioned areas all over the world.

The objectives of the Microbiology programme are to prepare:

  • Self-reliant graduates for self-employment.
  • Well trained personnel for the growing of wide spectrum of areas including: Medicine, Dairy, Poultry, Agriculture and Industries within the country.
  • Graduates for teaching and research work in microbiological studies in higher institutions of learning in the country and abroad.
  • graduates to acquire appropriate skills and abilities to manage and administer technological operations within the field of microbiology and allied areas.

An important highlight of the programme is the industrial attachment which will be for a period of six months. Students will be attached to wide spectrum of areas that have to do with microbial investigation/usage, such areas include Medicine, Dairy, Poultry, Agriculture and related industries covering the Rain Semester of 300 level. This will necessitate having a strong liaison service between the Department of Microbiology, Industries and the SIWES office of the University.

The students shall submit detailed reports of the industrial attachment at the end of the period. The reports shall be graded and a student’s assessment shall be based on his/her performance in the industry, the quality and oral presentation of his/her report.

The objectives of the industrial attachments are to:

  • Bring the industries (labour market) and students to close contact.
  • Have a preview of job opportunities for prospective graduates.
  • Expose students to practical application of knowledge in class.

UTME Admissions

Students intending to graduate in Microbiology must satisfy the general University entrance requirements and should normally pass:

  • Minimum of five Ordinary Level (SSCE or NECO) credit passes in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and any other subjects from Mathematics or and Agriculture at NOT more than two (2) sittings.
  • Minimum UTME/Post-UTME score for admission into the Department which shall be determined by the University admission committee.

Direct Entry admission

Candidates for direct entry while fulfilling the conditions in (i) and (ii) above must have in addition passes with a satisfactory grade at “A” level in Biology and in either Chemistry, and/or Physics, may be considered for 200 level admission.

The mode of study shall be full time. The B.Sc. Degree course will take 4 years of study for UTME entrants comprises a two-year Foundation programme, followed by a two year specialization programme including a minimum of 6 months of SIWES while the duration of study for Direct entry candidates will be three years.

The letter course code for Microbiology shall be MCB.
