A professor of chemical engineering and biotechnology consultant from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Professor Bamidele Solomon, has said application of green technology will be a major boost to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the country.

Green technology is a term that describes the use of technology and science to reduce human impacts on the natural environment.

Solomon stated this in his keynote address at the maiden international symposium of the First Technical University (Tech U), Ibadan.

The symposium, themed, ‘Green Technology for Sustainable National Development,’ was organised by the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, in honour of the pioneer vice chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ayobami Salami.

Solomon said green technology plays a significant role in agriculture, noting that it is one of the major innovation to prevent  environmental degradation.

He called for a good policy development and implementation, awareness creation, encouragement, research and adequate funding in the area of green technology.

In his address, the outgoing vice chancellor of the institution, Salami, lauded the organisers of the programme, describing it as highly emotional.

“It is highly emotional that this programme was organised in my name and it is something that relate to my area of study.

“I’m honoured that this is happening in my tenure as the vice chancellor this institution.” he said

Salami said a good foundation has been laid for the institution to thrive, appreciating all the staff  for their maximum and relentless efforts in projecting the image of the school.

In his remarks, vice chancellor designate, Prof. Adesola Ajayi, said that the pioneer vice chancellor has laid a strong and solid foundation which he would build upon, adding that the Institution will continue with the tradition that recognises dedication and commitment.

The Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Techonogy, Prof Charles Akanbi, commended the efforts of the outgoing vc towards bringing the university into limelight, describing him as a pathfinder.

“You have grown several students who are doing excellently well in their fields of study,” he said.
